Chapter 12

Family and Friends

Kyla shoves everything in her bag as quickly as she can when the last bell of the day rings. I can see her down the hall scrambling through everything in her locker. We finally have plans to spend some time together outside of school and I think we’re both excited and a little nervous.

We decided to spend the afternoon at her place. Her family has dinner plans and they have to take two separate cars to the event It made more sense for me to be there and for Kyla to drive me back to my place when they have to leave, which gives us a solid three hours together.

It’ll be the first time we’ve even seen each other outside of class, so three hours can go one of two ways. It can either feel like it isn’t anywhere near enough time, or it can feel like a millennia.

I’m praying for the first option.

Considering how quickly I felt things were on the rocks with James before… everything that happened at my locker the other day, I think I need to embrace the other friends I can have in my life. Of course, so far Kyla is the only other one, but I’m ready to dive in head first.

Kyla is shutting her locker so I try to go through my usual steps as quickly as possible without ruining anything. Everything in my bag needs to be organized so that it won’t get damaged before I can sort through everything more thoroughly at home. Feeling rushed to get it done doesn’t feel great, but I have a good feeling about all of this. It’ll be worth it in the long run.

I slam my locker shut just as Kyla reaches me. She’s got this huge smile on her face, showing all of her teeth. It feels good to know that I’m the reason that smile is on her face.

“Ready to go?” She asks, shifting her bag so that it’s more comfortable on her shoulder.

“You bet!” I shoulder my own bag and follow her into the parking lot.

Kyla leads me to a little Bug, lime green with an old black butterfly decal on the door. She pops the trunk and we both put our bags in before she slides into the font and unlocks the door. I tug on the handle two times before it unlocks so that on my third tug it opens, allowing it to seem a little bit more natural than it may have in another circumstance.

I’m sure Kyla will know about my OCD before the end of the day, but I want to maintain the illusion of normalcy for as long as possible.

I hate to make comparisons between people’s possessions, but the inside of Kyla’s car is in much worse shape than James. Well, the interior itself is in better condition, but it’s a lot messier. A gym bag is overflowing in the back seat and there are a couple of half used water bottles sitting in the cup holders.
